On that topic, note the new libpcap 0.9 API "pcap_setdirection()".  It 
*is* permissible for that API to fail on platforms where the underlying 
capture mechanism doesn't support it (so applications have to be 
prepared for it to fail), so you can just make it fail on Windows OT 
(95/98/Me) and NT 4.x.
